College Lessons Learned #9

#9- Due to the Honor Code that we as students have to write on EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT, PAPER, etc., Professors feel that because of that, when there is a test, they can just leave. No teacher during the test, and no cheaters. I'd say it’s close to paradise... minus the test.

"I have neither given or received, nor have I tolerated others' use of unauthorized aid," is our Honor Code, and this is something that you will find on every homework assignment, quiz, test, project or whatever in every single class. It monotonous, but whatever. It is stupid in my opinion, because it doesn't actually do anything. Guilt? I'm pretty sure, if you are purposefully cheating, you are not going to be feeling all that guilty, but hey that could quite possibly be just me.

However, I was surprised to see on my first test ever, my French professor just hand out the test, go over the instructions and walk out of the classroom. Because of the Honor Code, the teachers are supposed to just walk out of the room because we signed our test saying, "Yo' teach, we aint gonna cheat." I'm not a cheater and I have never cheated on a test before in my life, but it still caught me off guard.

Don't get me wrong, it is refreshing to have all the teachers trust that we're not going to cheat, but at the end of the day, you're still just taking a test.

In high school I had a teacher that when passing out a test would say, "The test is now out, if you are talking you are..."
"Cheating."
"And cheaters..."
"suck."

Moral: Cheaters suck. Writing the Honor Code sucks. Write the Honor Code, don't cheat, and we're all happy.
